When Mrs. McDonald came around in the mid 60's it was reported she would use a hairbrush.
There were of course, much fonder memories of the place. Miss Edgerley had to be the best (and most patient! with the likes of me)teacher, the spring carnival, Dads and Daughters night, real field trips, the Maypole dance in the spring, the recreation department downstairs. I can still smell the powdered handsoap from the 'lav' and the skylights in the lavs. That cafeteria/mpr with Mr. Rasmussen putting up and down the tables each day, the foot long hotdogs and eggo potato chips (yummers!) and of course I'll never, ever forget: when JFK was assinated and Mrs. Giantvally (this was 2nd grade) started crying on the intercom phone and the day they sent us home early when MLK was assinated 'for fears of riots'.
A special blessing to Miss Sarah Atkinson who stared us all in Kindergarten! We had a fine eduacation at Thornhill Elementery School!Skeeterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07226478018523536664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4232414902069130630.post-6371647808393522792008-11-23T15:19:00.000-08:002008-11-23T15:19:00.000-08:00I'm sorry I missed the 50 year anniversary. Fact is, I didn't hear about it until yesterday (11/22) while at a baby shower, while talking to a retired Thornhill teacher.

As it was, I also went to Thornhill School when it opened in 1958 and started as a fifth grader. When the new school opened we who lived nearer to Thornhill, ceased our allegiance to Montclair Elementary for Thornhill.

Another interesting fact, my father (Jens Hansen) was the architect who helped to design the school.

Elin Hansen
Oakland, CAAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4232414902069130630.post-28414221110947078232008-11-12T10:53:00.000-08:002008-11-12T10:53:00.000-08:00I loved Ms. Hom - she was my third grade teacher t...I loved Ms. Hom - she was my third grade teacher too (in 1983 I think). All of us girls in the class were infatuated with her. So smart, funny and glamorous - we wanted to be like her when we grew up.Danettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05746801407842534367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4232414902069130630.post-282807088797808412008-11-11T21:07:00.000-08:002008-11-11T21:07:00.000-08:00Hi. We moved back a couple of years later and I attended grades 4 through 6. I graduated in 1968 and then went on to Montera and Skyline. I just read Drew's post about the music cabinet (Drew and I were classmates in grades 4-6). Funny -- I don't remember the music cabinet, but I remember the dancing. Some of us guys actually liked it as we got to dance with the girls we liked. I think Mr Gharda was our teacher at the time. I remember that eventually he had us pick permanent dance partners. I picked Tracy Mayes, who I had a big crush on at the
time.

I think my mom gave me all my old class pictures a number of years ago. They are probably out in a box in the garage some place. When I find them, I will scan them and send them in. I have many other memories from Thornhill which I will try to post at some point.

Thanks!

Erik Johanssonaomanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02335274315571401465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4232414902069130630.post-48660094804173413232008-11-09T17:34:00.000-08:002008-11-09T17:34:00.000-08:00And you, Peter, are an old friend I remember from ...And you, Peter, are an old friend I remember from Thornhill days! One of my friends just asked me what one of my favorite birthday memories was, and I told her the time I got to bring my grandma as a special guest into my classroom! She truly was an inspiring teacher.Mermaid17https://www.blogger.com/profile/14149946820781721925noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4232414902069130630.post-19678480429644458162008-10-21T07:56:00.000-07:002008-10-21T07:56:00.000-07:00That's my mother at left! That's my mother at left!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
